Just for fun, the idea than withches used broomsticks to fly came from the fact than in times past some women used an hallucinogens mold ergot to drugs herselves. (Yeah, surprise, drugs are not something new). But eat ergot is fatal, so the more secure way to use it was spread it in their genitalia. With a stick.
So there you have. In every legend and myth there is a truth hidden.
